According to the German BSW-SOLAR (BSW), the number of residential solar and energy storage systems installed in Germany increased by 52% in 2022 compared to the previous year, with photovoltaic deployment growing by over 40%. Furthermore, BSW found that three-quarters of homeowners consider installing solar photovoltaic systems, with one-fifth planning to do so within the next 12 months.

Both Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg boast an impressive 250,000 solar rooftops each, while North Rhine-Westphalia takes the lead with a remarkable 330,000 solar rooftops.

Southern and western Germany enjoy a substantial advantage when it comes to solar energy infrastructure. Assuming a consistent growth rate of 20% in Schleswig-Holstein and 11% in Baden-Württemberg, it is estimated that even after 20 years, the northern regions would still have approximately one million fewer PV systems in absolute numbers compared to the southwest.

Analyzing the growth of PV installations in German cities by 2050, as assessed by the solar system comparison portal, Selfmade Energy, it becomes evident that eight out of the top ten cities are situated in East Germany.

With an outstanding growth rate of 106%, Creuzburg in Thuringia emerged as Germany’s solar capital. It was closely followed by Krempe in Schleswig-Holstein with a growth rate of 57%, and Richtenberg in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with a growth rate of 56%.

Among cities with populations exceeding 500,000, Cologne experienced the most robust growth in solar power generation in 2022, reaching an impressive 29%. Dusseldorf and Dresden followed closely behind with growth rates of 25% and 24% respectively.

When it comes to PV system density, Dortmund takes the lead, with nearly 10 installations per 1,000 people. Nuremberg boasts approximately 8 installations, while Stuttgart ranks third with 7 installations. Notably, Cologne, Dusseldorf and Dresden have witnessed remarkable growth in per capita PV installations over the past five years, with the number of installations more than doubling
